Dear 리인,

As far as I know, the word 'unity' does not have a specific meaning within the field of contemporary dance. However, dancers may use that expression indeed to refer to facts from our dancing experience. For example:

- When directing choreography for groups, you may insist on synchronization between dancers (what we call unison as well) or with the music, by asking for more 'unity'.

- When talking about the dramatic coherence of the choreographic vocabulary of a piece, you may refer to it as its general 'unity'.

- When talking about a technical sensation, in which the idea is to have a global perception of our dancing body instead of thinking movement as if it was executed by parts of the body, you may ask for a movement image of bodily 'unity'.

Etc., etc...

'Unity' is a very general term. It may have a specific meaning for a particular dance technique, dance genre or choreographic project. In that case, I can not know what your teacher has in mind. Otherwise, I believe the meaning of the word depends on the use that each person makes of it in each dancing context.

I hope this helps.

Warm regards,

Maria
