Hi!

I believe it all depends on your purposes, the relationship you want to establish with your audience, the context, the type of piece you are creating and so on...

You know it is not established anywhere how a contemporary dance piece should be. Choosing a title might work as a good strategy for marketing or promotional purposes. It can also be a way to synthesize the idea of your choreography (if there is any) or transmit a concept or feeling to your audience.

But still, if you decide not to give your contemporary dance solo a title, you will be expressing an aesthetical, artistic or ideological position.

You could just name it "Contemporary Dance Solo" or "Without title" and that would express a specific positioning or understanding towards your own work.

People use to think that artists feel or find a title during the creative process and that there are very coherent reasons for their choices. Remember that this is not always true. As you know, art is a free activity. But, if you are in a dialogue with an artistic community or your creative work responds to other people interests as well, you might want or need to use a title.

To go brief, you don't really have to name it. The title is another part of the creative process and it all depends on how you are facing it. The answer to if it 'should' have a title will depend on your own intention when creating this piece.

If you're thinking of commercializing your solo, I would say yes, you better give it a name.

I hope this help. Don't hesitate to answer back if you still want to share some considerations about it. This is an interesting topic for all of us.

Best wishes,

Maria
