Learning contemporary dance through DVDs

by Sarah
(Iran)

Hi, this is Sarah and I am a real fan of contemporary dance; the free spirit of this dance is so fascinating for me. However, I live in an Islamic country and therefore do not have access to classes of this type of dance. Moreover, I am 28 years old and have never taken any ballet training. I have to also mention that I have danced salsa for two years in the UK having a professional tutor.

My question is if I can learn contemporary dance at this age without knowing ballet? And if yes, is learning through DVDs efficient and practical?

Bests
Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Learning through DVDs is neither efficient nor practical. DVDs will never replace the tuition of a good teacher. Yet, if that is the only option you have and you really want to learn, there's a big part of the process that you can try like that.

I wrote some comments and gave some important tips to another young dancer that needs to study with videos. Please read my reply at that chat if you decide yourself to start learning from videos:

You can learn contemporary dance at your age (and without knowing ballet), but it may be more difficult than if you were a child. Yet, it all depends on your own conditions for dance. If you’re thinking about being able to work as a dancer or any related task, you should read my replies here:
