Dear Ty,

There are some easy tricks that can convert ballet movements and choreography into a more 'modern like' dance:

- Put your feet in 'flex' position, instead of 'point' position.

- Add curves or tilts of the spine.

- Extend your arms and open your hands and fingers.

- Go to the floor (rolling, touring on hips, lie down...)

- Convert movements that are 'en dehors' to forms in 'parallel position'.

Now, if it is easy for you to compose with choreographic vocabulary from ballet, just do it that way and then apply the tricks. You will see how the character of your dance changes completely.

Another option is to look for videos in the web and choose movements that you feel that are good for your piece. We have a page with nice examples at contemporary-dance.org. Here's the link to visit it:

Or, you could also improvise freely while listening to the music and fix the movements that you like. You can film yourself and then watch it, or pay attention while improvising and stop when you feel that something nice came out. Then you repeat it to memorize it and move on.

Don't hesitate to let us all know how you get on or to ask more questions. A lot of visitors of contemporary-dance.org are interested in issues about choreography like yours.

I wish you the best for your piece!

Kindly,

Maria
