BELGIUM: Masterclass 'Dancing in public space' by Brussels choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle (21st to 25th August )

Benjamin Vandewalle is Brussels based choreographer known for creating his work in different contexts. With his show 'Birdwatching 4x4', in which the audience drove through the city in a mobile observation box while looking out to see the dancers dance in public space, he made an important shift in his artistic development. He went outside the walls of his familiar dance studio and embraced the challenges of dancing in public space. We asked him to give a masterclass in Destelheide to introduce us to his working methods and his experience.

"In a studio, you try to create a safe place where everything is controlled: the climate, the wind, the temperature, the light. The open space contains factors that may vary: uneven grounds, temperature differences, wind, rain, changing light and endless directions in which you can move and dance." - Benjamin Vandewalle

Practical information:

During this five-day master class, we create (dance) material tailored to Destelheide’s domain that will invite the audience to open all the senses. We are looking for dance phrases that can influence the interaction and perspective of viewers. At the SPOT ON festival on September 16th, you’ll be able to test this material on a diverse audience.

All expenses during your stay are included- the workshop, meals and nights.

From Monday 21st August 9 am to Friday 25th August 17:00 with show time on 16th September during the SPOT ON festival in Destelheide.
